Chesme church is a fine neogothic monument in St. Petersburg built in 1780 by arch. Yury Felten for the Russian Empress Catherine II. on the way to her beloved Tsarskoye Selo residence. This church and near palace was built to commemorate the Russian victory over Turkish forces in 1770 in Chesme Bay in Aegean Sea. The neighbouring palace served also as home for soldiers wounded in that war. Today near Moskovskaya metro station and part of the city (built in Stalin' time) and a Russian Orthodox Church sice 1991.
In pink-red and white and with vertical structures and quatrefoil (four leaves like clover) layout it is very original reflecting the anglomania fashion of the Empress and the Turkish exoticism. Rasputin coffin was here in 1916 before its burial in Tsarskoye Selo.
