Travel Guide
Beaver Island
Step onto the largest island in Lake Michigan. You’ll feel a thousand miles away from the tourist crowds and a bit closer to nature.

Jump aboard the ferry to Beaver Island to experience an authentic Michigan way of life. Head out for a day of hiking, lounging on the beach or getting involved with a community event. This tranquil part of the world offers plenty of activities.

Time your visit to coincide with one of the fun annual community celebrations. Dance under the summer stars at Beaver Island Music Festival, get inspired by the Museum Week Art Show or relax to the sweet sounds of the Baroque Festival. Sign up for a marathon or half-marathon or join the annual bike festival.

Spend the rest of the week fishing from pebble beaches and swimming in clear lake water. Go hiking through the old forests, follow the bird-watching trail or find a comfortable log and watch a stunning sunset from the island’s western coast.

Nibble homemade cookies while you shop for fresh vegetables, cheese and honey at the summer farmers markets. For a more substantial meal head to one of the restaurants for a hearty grilled steak and craft beer.

Explore the past at one of the many museums around town. Visit a 19th-century log cabin at the Protar Home Museum, check out vintage farming equipment at Heritage Park or learn about boating history at the Marine Museum. Take a guided tour to see the lighthouses, churches, inland lakes and natural treasures.

Find out about some of the island’s past inhabitants, who have visited and occupied the island for thousands of years. The Odawa groups have a long history tied to this archipelago. Archeological findings have included ornate artifacts and extensive evidence of cooking fires. A Mormon community arrived and established itself here in the mid-19th century, before their leader was killed and the community disbanded. Visit the Old Mormon Print Shop Museum to learn more.

When you need a break from the stresses of modern life, Beaver Island will meet your needs.
