• First things first, put in your passport, important documents, bank cards and daily medications. Next, you'll need some entertainment to help pass the time. A thrilling novel and a tablet crammed with your favorite movies are some great options. If you hope to take a quick snooze, a quality neck pillow and a pair of noise-canceling headphones will also come in handy. Finally, find room for a few toiletry items so you'll arrive at your destination feeling fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated by security. Sharp or pointed objects, like a pocket knife, and dangerous products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and gasoline, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a potential risk on long-haul flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to poor circulation and inactivity, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.
