“A nice hotel, but I was disappointed with my last day. I stayed for 5 nights and asked for a late checkout on the final day, only to be told checkout latest was 11am and every hour after would be a charge of £30. This seems a little extortionate and as a frequent traveller and user of this hotel many time before, a little user unfriendly. I understand they have to clean the rooms and make ready for other people, but surely there is a more customer friendly way of dealing with this. ”

“Friendly, welcoming check in. Nice big rooms. Very dog friendly. Breakfast was outstanding! So hospitable....explained to the manager that we found our beds uncomfortable, the manager organised new mattresses with no question and a smile. We did find the room to be a bit stuffy as the only ventilation was possible of we kept the french door on the latch, which was perfect during the day but perhaps a little unsafe at night. “We visit Durham at least once a month & try to stay at the same place all the time however we stayed here on this occasion, as usual place appeared to be closed. Very nice room & clean. Only issue I had was pillows weren’t very comfortable & the noise of a drill going in room next door just after 9am on day of departure, was a bit of a shock. We Would stay again though. ”

“Nice overnight stay with my partner. Room spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. A little soft for my liking but I did sleep well. Was very thankful for the fan and I’m used to sleeping with one at home. Delicious food…the steak and ale pie was amazing! Thoroughly enjoyed the cooked breakfast before the long drive home. Would definitely recommend the Captain cook Inn and we would be more than happy to stay again. ”

“We were initially given a room on the first floor, but on returning after going for a meal, we were asked to move, to a room on the ground floor. After five minutes we were asked to move again to the first floor, next to our original room!. The receptionist was very apologetic. We think the bathroom needs updating, it has a shower over the bath, but no hand rails, so getting in and out, can be difficult, as there is nothing to hold on to.”

“I give a 3 star rating in the facility area as the beds and pillows fealt like I was sleeping on building site materials. The bed was solid like what I’d imagine sleeping on a concrete block would be like and the pillows were like sand bags. So uncomfortable I hardly slept but that aside I couldn’t fault the place otherwise”
