Relax on the spacious lawns of this public park, which is centered around a lake and features a concert pavilion, sports fields and playgrounds for children.

Freedom Park is one of Charlotte’s favored recreation areas, encompassing 98 acres (39.7 hectares) of grassy parkland, lakeside trails and excellent sports facilities. Built in the late 1940s in honor of World War II veterans, the park is now home to an exciting range of seasonal events and programs. Watch a live music performance at the pavilion or take the kids to check out an antique steam engine and exciting playgrounds. Watch local sports teams go head-to-head or join the action with your friends.

Explore the large park by strolling, jogging or cycling along its network of paved pathways. The trails include several footbridges, including a historic stone bridge. Make your way to the park’s 7-acre (2.8-hectare) lake. Spot ducks and geese or admire the central fountain in the lake. Pack a picnic and grill your meal at the park’s sheltered picnic areas.

Find out what teams are playing at the park’s soccer and baseball fields. Bring your own equipment to play on the tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. Let the kids explore the park’s exciting playground and check out the cab of a historic steam engine. The locomotive was built in 1920 and has been on display at the park since 1959.

You might see free film screenings or musical performances, which are held at the park pavilion in summer. If you are visiting in September, don’t miss the exciting program of events held during the annual Festival in the Park. The festival showcases the work of local artists and craftspeople, as well as musicians and entertainers.

While in the area, check out the adjacent Charlotte Nature Museum and take the children to see the animals at Discovery Place.

Freedom Park is located between Charlotte’s historic neighborhoods of Dilworth and Myers Park. The park is 2.7 miles (4.3 kilometers) south of central Charlotte and can be reached via a 15-minute drive or a 20-minute bus ride. Parking is available on site and the park is free to visit year-round.
