Sitting in the shadow of a volcano, this lakeside community charms with its beautiful setting. Inside the town, find indigenous culture and exceptional places to relax.

On Lake Atitlán’s western shore, San Pedro La Laguna is a small Mayan town surrounded by great scenery. Hike to the top of the volcano, shop for traditional handcrafts and learn about local folklore.

Visit the old village, situated a few hundred feet up the hill. Here you will discover traditional Mayan houses and the town’s indigenous population. Join them in the San Pedro la Laguna Market. Shop for beautiful embroidery, woven baskets and other locally made goods. Don’t be afraid to haggle for a good price.

Back in the main town, be sure to visit the Museo Tz’unun ‘Ya to learn more about the culture and folklore of the native Tz’utujil people and secrets of the lake’s geology. See exhibits of traditional costumes and cooking practices. Don’t miss the Church of St. Peter, a beautiful building with a white façade that sits in a small park.

Volcán San Pedro towers 9,908 feet (3,020 meters) above the town. A hike to the summit is achievable for most people who have good, general fitness. Go up with a guide who will keep you on the safest paths. If you don’t fancy the climb, enjoy the scenery from the lake. Rent a canoe or kayak to paddle on the calm waters.

Wind down from all this activity at Los Thermales, where you will find hot tubs full of spring water that is heated by the sun. Alternatively, check out La Mysticoteca, a health and wellness center where massages and meditation lessons are available.

Food and accommodation in San Pedro is cheap and of a high standard. You can access the town by boat from several nearby settlements or catch a bus from Antigua or Guatemala City. The journey from both these places takes between 3 and 4 hours.

San Pedro’s warm climate makes it a good vacation spot throughout the year. Among the best times to visit are during Easter for the Semana Santa celebrations and in June when the town’s patron saint is honored with festivities.

The property itself is nice, with very large and spacious rooms. The staff was friendly and welcoming. However, the surrounding area was not very appealing, and the breakfast options were quite limited.

It’s a fun atmosphere. Things to do and late night food. It makes me sad to see all of the trash everywhere.
