"Stunning views, but fundamental service failures and absent management.
While Sababa Resort looks beautiful in photos, my actual experience was far from a 'resort' stay. We were left without water from 12:45 pm until 11:30 pm. Not being able to use basic bathroom services for nearly 11 hours is unacceptable at this price point. To make matters worse, management was completely MIA. After sending a WhatsApp message and being told it would take 2–3 hours, they stopped responding entirely.
On top of the water issues, many rooms lacked light and the Wi-Fi was unreliable. Speaking with other guests, it seems these 'technical issues' are a daily occurrence here. While the ground staff are lovely people, the lack of leadership and accountability from management is a dealbreaker. You can find the same views and better amenities nearby for a fraction of the cost. Save your money and stay elsewhere."
"The hotel is okay, most of the natural beauty around it makes it look a lot better. There is no AC so be prepared to be warm during the day. Our room was over an hour and a half late and we were not compensated whatsoever even though we were waiting for them. It's time for isn't overly attentive and the wait time for the food is definitely not worth it. "
"El Picnic was a truly special place to stay on Lake Atitlán. The hosts are wonderful and make the experience along with the beautiful setting.
Gabi went above and beyond, from helping coordinate transportation before our arrival to suggesting and arranging unique local experiences during our stay. One of her recommendations, a bird-watching hike, ended up being a highlight of our trip (we even saw a quetzal!).
Meals were excellent, with delicious breakfasts and dinners shared with other guests and the hosts. There’s not really a menu, but everything was fresh, delicious and thoughtfully prepared, and added to the experience.
This is not a traditional hotel. It’s open air and immersive. You’ll hear the natural sounds of the area at night, which was part of the charm.
Good to know: there are quite a few stairs, and you should be comfortable with that. Bugs were not an issue at all during our stay.
If you’re looking for a unique, authentic experience with incredible hosts, we highly recommend El Picnic."
"This hotel stands out in Panajachel due to its modern conveniences, spacious rooms, with nice views and balconies. The pool area is great to relax whether you have kids playing in one end of the pool or adults in the other area. There also two hot tubs that operate on a reservation system. The hot tubs do appear older and need some tiles to be replaced and the water is not too hot but still relaxing for the cooler afternoons and evenings. The hotel restaurant was nice and convenient if you don’t want to venture out into the town. Location great right by the lake to take tours."
"Hotel restaurant exceeded expectations and the massage at the spa was fantastic. However, we had an ant problem at one point in our bathroom and the front desk isn't 24 hour. Front desk could have been more helpful with giving recommendations and information (for example, one of their restaurant recs was closed on Sundays and they didn't tell us that). The noise from the bar next door was extremely loud until 10pm each day. Pool and hot tub were nice. It was great to have someone come meet us at the dock and get our luggage upon arrival to San Marcos."
