Staff very courteous. However...told at check in that I had been 'upgraded' from single to a double. The double was up 3 flights of stairs and was the last room at the hotel - room 356. The cold tap in the sink was no more than a dribble and the hair dryer set off the smoke alarm in 3 minutes.
My main objection is this - I booked months ago. A single male colleague was 'upgraded' to a double on first floor despite booking after me.
Why do hotels always penalize solo female customers giving them the worst, most difficult to access rooms??
It's a regular experience for me but I am still disappointed that the Mercure was no different from all the other hotels who seem to treat solo female customers like a lower class of customer. Very sad.
