The Bass Rock, seen here from Belhaven Bay. This island is a volcanic remnant and as such is comprised chiefly of basalt. it lies 3 miles off the coast from North Berwick. Unlike many small islands of it's size it has a colourful history of royal visits, political prisoners and literary mentions, most notably in R L Stevenson's 'Catriona.'
It is currently home to the worlds largest colony of Northern Gannets and is a nature reserve managed by the Scottish Seabird Centre.
