Head to this beach to experience its watersports scene, as well as its wind-patterned sand dunes and serene atmosphere.

One of the longest beaches in Tenerife, crescent-shaped El Médano Beach is bordered by dramatic sandy dunes, with the rugged mountain peak of Montana Roja rising to the west. The seasonal trade winds make it a world-class destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing, while its laid-back atmosphere makes it a great spot for relaxing.

Bring along the whole family for a day out here. The water is shallow and there is a playground near the main access point to help keep kids entertained. Unwind on the golden sand while topping up your tan and look for colored kites twisting and turning in the sky above. When you need to stretch your legs, meander along the seafront promenade, which is lined by restaurants, snack bars and ice-cream vendors. Many of the restaurants and bars have terraces, perfect for snacking on tapas and sipping on beer as you people-watch.

Because of the regular trade winds that blow across the beach, wind-powered watersports are often practiced here so try to spot surfers performing tricks out on the waves. Venture under the sea by snorkeling or scuba diving and swim alongside curious tropical fish. The nearby resort areas of Los Cristianos and Playas de Las Americas offer a great selection of waterfront activities and restaurants. Nude bathers can swim in the secluded areas such as Playa de la Tejita.

To see the beach at its best, walk along the boardwalk at sunrise or at sunset, when the light is at its most alluring. Head west to reach Machado, where surfers go out to sea to catch the waves, and east to Playa el Cabezo, where international windsurfing competitions are often held.

El Médano Beach is located near the airport on the southeast coast of Tenerife. Parking is available and there is a taxi stand nearby.

Funky town with nice beach. Check the forecast, because it might be very windy.
