A jewel in the nature trails of this rocky park, this lake and its lily pads are dwarfed by the immense rocky behemoths around it.
Steep mountains dotted with forests surround scenic Emerald Lake, at the end of its namesake trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. Use Bear Lake Trail as a path to the lake and enjoy the absolute serenity as you approach the calm waters. Look closely to spot the chipmunks and birds living in the dense forest around the lake.
On Bear Lake Trail, reach charming Nymph Lake, which is adorned by beautiful wildflowers and pond lilies. Spot the tall rock formations of Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain swarming over picturesque Dream Lake, where you can see Glacier Gorge. Pick out your favorites from the many mountain summits, lakes and valleys punctuating the trail.
Arrive at Emerald Lake, from which you can also spot the impressive Hallett Peak. Relax with some snacks and drinks and watch the trout swimming through the transparent water, which is decorated with lily pads.
Come early in the morning to avoid the crowds on this heavily trafficked route. Note that the trail is considered moderate, with some elevation and paved paths. It runs for 3 miles (5 kilometers) and is most accessible from April through November, before it becomes covered with ice and snow. If you hike in winter, bring snowshoes and walking sticks to help navigate the path, before arriving at the frozen lake.
Emerald Lake is in the center of Rocky Mountain National Park. Hike along Bear Lake Trail to reach this picturesque diamond, which stands between Lake Haiyaha and Nymph Lake. Ride the free shuttle bus or drive southwest from Estes Park for about half an hour to get to the Bear Lake Trailhead.
