Lake Union Tours

Lake Union featuring boating and a lake or waterhole as well as a small group of people
Home to houseboats, seaplanes, sailboats and kayaks, Seattle’s downtown lake is a top place to hang out and enjoy the city’s maritime culture.

Fans of Sleepless in Seattle will recognize Lake Union, home of Tom Hanks’ character’s houseboat in the film. This glacial, freshwater lake is beloved for its floating homes and watersports. Visit Lake Union to enjoy iconic Seattle views and access to pretty parks and characterful neighborhoods.

Rent a kayak or paddleboard at the north or south end of the lake. The waters are calmer here than in nearby Puget Sound or Lake Washington, making this a great place for first-time paddlers. Venture past cozy houseboats, watch seaplanes and enjoy close-up views of the Space Needle.

Learn about the region’s maritime heritage at The Center for Wooden Boats on the lake’s southern edge. Join free public sails on Sundays or rent a small watercraft and explore on your own. Walk to the neighboring Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) for insightful exhibits on everything from the Great Seattle Fire to the impact of the tech industry on the city.

Explore Lake Union Park, also on the lake’s southern shore, and its model boat pool, small beach area, spray park and historic boats. From here, it’s an easy walk or streetcar ride into the South Lake Union neighborhood and Downtown Seattle.

Picnic, fly a kite or let the kids play on the revamped play structure at historic Gas Works Park on the lake’s northern edge. The Burke-Gilman Bike Trail passes by, hugging the lake’s southern shore and connecting Gas Works to nearby Fremont, Wallingford and points beyond.

Explore Gas Works Park, Lake Union Park, The Center for Wooden Boats and MOHAI by walking the 6-mile (10-kilometer) Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop. On the way try several restaurants, explore a few little pocket parks and check out enviable real estate.

Travel to Lake Union via car, bus or streetcar. Park for free at Gas Works Park or use the pay lot on the southern edge. A South Lake Union Line streetcar station is located at Lake Union Park.
