Zubeida is ‘ok’ but not special

Our stay at Zubeida was pleasant but nothing special. We expected a higher level of service for the price we paid. While the food, staff and surroundings were nice, we were somewhat disappointed with their inability to secure bookings for fun activities in the area. The beach area is full of local men trying to sell boat trips (be warned: don’t expect a walk along the beach without getting hassled a few times). On one occasion, the vendor we spoke to was clearly running a scam. When we asked the hotel, they simply gave us a WhatsApp number for someone who might be able to help us book. When he was busy (as was the case over Christmas), we weren’t left with much support and subsequently didn’t do any of the activities we planned. The Zubeida website is misleading to suggest they can organise all this stuff for guests! We recommend to Zubeida that they put more time into supporting visitors with activities, restaurant recommendations etc - especially for those new to Kenya - it would have made our stay much better! In general, I think a better level of ‘concierge’ service is required to justify the high cost. We found that we had to extract information from them, as opposed to them having the information ready to share with us. Eating directly in the villa is nice, but the restaurant area around the pool is pretty ordinary. And that summed up our stay really - pleasant but not memorable, and no service that went beyond the bare minimum.

I’m very surprised by the good reviews on this place - I would highly recommend not staying here! Not only does the air conditioning hardly work, but there is only AC in the bedrooms, not the living room, kitchen, etc, despite 30 C temperatures. We had numerous problems with bug infestations, tons of ants and crickets in our bedrooms and bathrooms, which was disgusting. The WiFi is appalling and does not work at all, something they even told us at checkin. There are no safes or places to lock away your things and the locks on the doors to the outside are flimsy at best - some of the closet doors have locks, but they didn’t work and had to be fixed. There are no seats or lounge chairs on the beach - the image shown on their listing of seats in the sand is what they will set up for you at $50 a person (absurd). The gate to the beach is locked, even when we try to get back in the middle of the day, and the security guards were never nearby to let us in. There is not 24/7 help via reception, so if you have a problem at night they won’t even read or respond to your message until the next morning. The only good things (and I’m stretching here) were communication via WhatsApp, only with Zeenat who was amazing and their willingness to refund us some money for the bug problem.

The staff are kind and friendly especially Caroline who is one of the housekeepers and Monica and Lilian at the restaurant. We were in villa number 3 and could see the ocean from our living room and patio which was amazing.

The Zubeida is located at Diani Beach but down a bit from the other hotels. It is quiet and peaceful and has protected access to the beach. The pool is nice, though needing a bit of a facelift, it was clean and quite acceptable. What sets it apart is the service! Maureen and her team are excellent. Anything we needed anything it was right there. The cook did her very best to accommodate our wishes and the cleaning lady was delightful and spotless! We will return...sooner than later!

The villas are beautiful with lovely views of the ocean. The ocean is a short walk from the villa and there is also a lovely pool and small dining area. The bedrooms have air conditioning, which is great! The restaurant has amazing waffles and we really enjoyed the haloumi cheese. The employees were friendly and accomodating to our needs. The manager, Maureen, was helpful with transportation and answering any questions or concerns. My family and I would definitely recommend this property to everyone! The rooms are clean, the food was great, and the views/proximity to the beach were amazing. We had a lovely stay.

Beautiful and serene!

Beautiful and serene! We had the place all to ourselves. Amazing and so relaxing. Loved laying on the king sized outdoor bed and looking over the amazing ocean view (at least the first few cottages have a view - only the villa is right on the beach).Manager is very nice and responsive. Service is nice and with a smile, but be prepared to slow down. Restaurant is small and right on the lovely pool, but very, very basic and quite limited. Wonderful break at the white sandy Galu beach!
