Pack a picnic to have on the green lawns, try boating activities and appreciate uninterrupted views of Heidelberg’s Old Town from this riverside park.

Bask in the sunshine and temperate climate of one of Germany’s warmest cities at the Neckarwiese. Local families, groups of friends and vacationers alike come to enjoy this stretch of greenery set on the north banks of the Neckar River. Find children’s play areas at Neckarwiese, go for walks along the riverfront and spot city landmarks.

Visitors flock in their droves to the park throughout the mild summer months. Bring your picnic basket, throw down a blanket and relax on the grassy lawns. Watch as games of soccer, frisbee and volleyball take place around you. There are two playgrounds, one with water games and another with traditional equipment such as a climbing frame, slides and swings.

Pass beneath Theodor-Heuss Bridge to find a boat dock. Motorboats are available to rent here between April and September. If you have purchased the HeidelbergCARD then present it to receive a discount. As you cruise along the river, take photos of the medieval cityscape and the encompassing forested hills.

Back on dry land, stroll east via a waterfront pathway to Karl Theodor Bridge (aka Old Bridge). Don’t be surprised to share the pathway with ducks and geese. The lawns set on either side of the bridge afford sublime views of the Old Town. See the turrets and towers of Heidelberg Castle, the clocktower of the Church of the Holy Spirit and a colorful ensemble of old merchants’ houses.

Next to the bridge stands a sandstone landmark called the Heidelberg Liebesstein. Couples attach locks to its sides in a mutual pact to confirm their love. It also features a plaque engraved with a poem by Joseph von Eichendorff, in which he describes the view through a hole in the stone and the love for his muse.

From the Old Town reach Neckarwiese by walking across Karl Theodor Bridge and Theodor Heuss Bridge. Neckarwiese is an excellent vantage point for watching the Heidelberg Castle Illuminations, which take place in June, July and September.
