Winter Park Historical Museum chronicles the development of the city since its beginning in 1881. According to local history, Loring Chase from the cold and windy city of Chicago was advised to be in a warmer climate to improve his health. When the businessman arrived in this Florida area he found not much more than a few weathered houses and rail tracks, but he saw potential. Discover how the city of Winter Park evolved, earning a reputation of being an art and literary center. The area’s early history has strongly influenced its presence today.

Learn about the rise and fall of the town’s hotel industry. A number of palatial buildings eventually succumbed to development, including one that was once Florida’s largest hotel. The city’s history is also told in oral form by a number of citizens who personalize events through recordings held by the museum. If you have kids, find out what the museum schedule is for children’s shows that incorporate a historical aspect of Winter Park.

Over 700 structures of significance indicate the city’s historical magnitude. Pick up a free copy of the walking tour guide at the museum following your perusal of the many interesting displays. Plan on seeing 20 points of interest along the walking route, which focuses primarily on the business district.

An extended tour is also available it includes an additional four stops. Have your child go on a detective hunt during the walking tour by finding answers to a list of clues available at the museum.

Refer to the program of activities at the museum, which includes special events and a series of talks on subjects of historical interest. Admission to the museum is free. It is located on New England Avenue at Winter Park Farmers Market.

Winter Park Historical Museum is closed Sunday and Monday. Pre-arrange specialized tours and wheelchair access.
