Visit Harry P. Leu Gardens, a botanical oasis featuring over 40 diverse plant collections including a tropical rain forest, Florida’s largest formal rose garden and an outdoor butterfly garden. On the shore of Lake Rowena, the gardens are a haven when you are looking for a little quiet time in Orlando.
In the heart of the gardens sits the Leu House Museum. Built in 1888, it was home to four families and has been meticulously restored to reflect the history of house and exemplifying turn-of-the-century living. Harry P. Leu and his wife, Mary Jane, the last owners, donated the estate to the City of Orlando in 1961. Docent led tours of the home are available Tuesday to Sunday. Check the official website for times when you can join one of the tours, which are a great opportunity to learn about the history of the gardens and Orlando.
Leu Gardens is home to one of the largest camellia collections in North America. Peak camellia season is December through February. There is also an amazing collection of palms, bamboo, cycads and gingers. Stroll along miles of paved walkways under the shade of majestic oaks draped with hanging moss, magnolia trees and camphor trees. There are many perennials and annuals blooming throughout the year. Plus, there are various traveling exhibits each year and fun scavenger hunts as well.
