We do require a deposit in case some well meaning guest accidently sets fire to their room or something happens. I do not know who helped you, but I suggest to all my guests not to use a Debit card at a Rental Car agency or a Hotel just because of the delay returning excess holds on my real money, whereas Credit cards are usually 24 hours after departure.
