Menger Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"Staying here was definitely a unique experience. This beautiful historic hotel is full of character, charm, and fascinating history. We didn't realize its reputation for ghost stories until we looked up the hotel's history, which made our stay even more interesting! The atmosphere can feel a little eerie at night, but in a fun and adventurous way. It truly feels like staying in a living museum. We understand that this is a historic property, but some areas, particularly the floors and bathrooms, could benefit from additional maintenance and updates. We heard that renovations are planned soon, which is exciting. We hope they are able to preserve the hotel's stunning architecture and historic ambiance while making the necessary improvements. One thing we especially loved was the comfort of the beds—they were exceptionally comfortable. Overall, it was a memorable stay and a great experience for anyone who appreciates history and unique hotels."

"Let's start from the lobby: very clean, very welcoming. The room seemed clean, but it was not. The restroom was dirty, very dusty, and the shower had poor maintenance with a rusted tub and shower head. The door was missing pieces, as if something had chewed on it. The bed mattress was the worst part for me; you could feel all the coils. It was very bad; you could see it just by looking at the bed—it was all bumpy. It definitely needs a new mattress. And one thing I left wondering was if they had some type of bug because we left with bumps on our legs and arms. Do not recommend."

"The room was very clean, beds were soft and comfortable. The only issues we had was the key cards that were given to us did not work after the second time we had to get a 3rd set. The pool was dirty and the a.c in the lobby was not working which was hot, but did not affect our room. Everything else was good."

"I am extremely disappointed with my stay at this hotel and would not recommend it to anyone. Upon arrival, my room was not ready, despite checking in at the scheduled time. After waiting, I was finally given a room that had an overwhelming bleach smell, making it very uncomfortable to stay in. The room did not feel fresh or properly prepared for guests. The pictures online definitely do not match the actual rooms. The room looked much older. To make matters worse, the air conditioning barely worked and could not maintain a comfortable temperature. The room remained uncomfortable throughout my stay, and it was clear that maintenance issues had not been properly addressed. What was most frustrating was the lack of customer service. Hospitality starts with customer service, and unfortunately this hotel failed in that area. Guests should feel welcomed, valued, and respected, but that was not my experience. Based on the poor service I received, I would not stay here again and would not recommend this hotel to others. For the price paid, this experience was completely unacceptable. Between the room not being ready, the strong chemical odor, the malfunctioning air conditioning, and the unhelpful staff, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I have had. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a comfortable and welcoming stay."

"I have been a loyal guest of JW Marriott and visit the San Antonio property regularly. However, during my most recent stay, I was surprised to see that a large portion of the pool loungers now require an additional upgrade or reservation fee. In the past, only the cabana area required an upgrade, which seemed fair and reasonable. This time, however, it appeared that nearly a third of the standard loungers in the common pool area were also reserved for upgraded guests. Considering that room rates have already increased significantly, I found this change disappointing. One of the attractions of staying at a resort of this caliber is having access to its amenities without feeling that more and more areas are being restricted behind additional fees. I have always enjoyed staying at this property and hope management will reconsider this policy, as it negatively impacts the overall guest experience."
