An imposing, dramatically placed citadel, this castle serves as a reminder of the years of unrest on Italy’s northwest coast during the Middle Ages.

Growing out of a rocky outcrop, Doria Castle occupies a strategic and extremely scenic location on the coast. Explore the ruins of the fortification and gaze up at the vaulted ceiling of the grand main hall, which is made from locally quarried stone. Stroll along the outside wall and marvel at the spectacular coastal scenery.

Doria Castle was built in the 12th century and held a vital frontline position during Genoa’s ongoing battle with Pisa to the south. Years of war have taken their toll on the castle and much of it has been renovated, though it retains its majestic presence.

Enter the castle and venture inside the hypostyle hall. It may be a shell of its former self but the eight pillars that line the high ceiling still remain and are an impressive site. Walk up the stairs and along cobbled paths to the house of the lord of the castle, located directly above the main hall. The wide archways and thick, towering wall would have provided protection against the enemy.

Make your way back out into the open on the upper level, where a wall lined with wide trenches and watchtowers runs from the southwest to the northwest of the castle. Check out the domed turrets, which would have been constantly guarded and the slit-like portals from where archers would have taken aim.

Save some time to enjoy the magnificent views. Look south and admire the tall spire of the Church of St. Peter. Beyond it, the golden beaches and lush woodland of the island of Palmaria can be seen amid the sparkling open sea.

Doria Castle is located just a short distance south of Portovenere. The castle is open all day and there is a small admission fee.
