Tranquil surroundings with a 5 star multi-course meals each day for breakfast and dinner. The sauna and hot baths were great for winding down after a day of touring. "Our issue was very specific and might not affect most. There were limited gluten free options in the restaurants for lunch and dinner. Although you can convince a chef in other places to grill fish or steak easily, it was not an option here, at least in the common restaurant. Breakfast was better. They had gluten free bread and many options. Also, all restaurants (there are two other special ones) close rather early. But other than these (which might not be a big issue for most) a really good hotel. Fantastic staff."

"room fine bathroom a bit dated as is the rest of the hotel. overall good location right on lake all rooms have view of lake pool is free for resident but very over clorinated which gave us all bad rashes. so only used once which was a sham as reason we stayed there. station close and hotel has shuttle bus to station 3 times an hour which was good over all hotel ok probably not to my taste but very popular with locals we were only english there and a good place to stay away from hustle and bustle of kyoto but easy access as only two stops on train. stayed there 20 years ago and it hadn’t changed since then"

They are clean, convenient, and affordable, and they tend to have lots of useful amenities or people who might have forgotten to bring something like a toothbrush or razor. This particular hotel has a really convenient location that's a short walk from several train stations and from a couple of very charming and pleasant shopping arcades. Miidera (三井寺) and Lake Biwa (琵琶湖) are also manageable walks. Otsu is a lovely and underrated city, and this hotel is in a really nice part of the city."
