Riviera Maya, Mexico hotel rooms at the Melia

"Overall, the stay did not meet expectations for a luxury resort at this price point. The first room assigned was extremely noisy and did not match the river view category booked. This was only corrected after three nights when we were moved to a higher floor in a different building, which was a much better experience. Certain floors (especially 3 and 5) function as transit levels between buildings, and hallway noise echoes directly into the rooms. For a resort positioned in this category, the sound insulation and room experience fall short compared to similar luxury hotels. We were also celebrating my wife’s birthday, which was noted multiple times at check-in, through concierge restaurant reservations, and again at the restaurants themselves. Unfortunately, there was never any acknowledgment, which was disappointing considering the trip was planned around the occasion. The restaurants were overall just average, with some dining experiences feeling rushed rather than refined. Another frustration was the lack of clear information throughout the resort. Finding restaurants, activities, schedules, or even understanding what certain areas were often required figuring things out yourself. Many places are not clearly identified from the main walkways, which becomes frustrating at a property this large The resort has beautiful surroundings and a strong concept, but the execution, service consistency, and attention to detail did not match expectations for the price or star level"

The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, and the breakfast buffet had a great variety of fresh options. We especially enjoyed the outdoor infinity pool area—very comfy and it was a perfect spot to relax not a real party destination but Highly recommend!"

"First time to Mexico and was not expecting that level of service, amenities, and cleanliness of the resort. We were fortunate enough to go when the spring break crowds were gone so while there were still other tourists it was not overly congested. There attention to detail was amazing."

"We’ve been coming to the Barcelo for more than 20 years. We were very surprised to see how rundown it had become and how poorly it was maintained. The food was mediocre, at best, meats every day were dried out and we watched other guests sawing to cut pieces off. Our room was not cleaned and no clean towels provided 2 of our 7 days there. In addition, the gift shop at the pool area completely ripped us off. There was no price tag on a 6oz bottle of sunscreen and shame on us for not asking the cost. We anticipated paying $20 or so, which would have been more than double its store cost,especially since we’re guests, but when the charge appeared on our credit card, they had charged us $56!!! We thought it must be a mistake, but no, rip your guests off and extort them. Needless to say, we will not ever be returning to the Barcelo."
